When it’s a hot summer morning in Winnipeg, nothing could be worse than realizing your air conditioner isn’t performing the way it is meant to. The last thing you need to do is request AC repair. But your air conditioner is a quite complicated system, so it can be hard to figure out what’s causing the issue solo.

That’s why Kirkfield Heating & Air Conditioning created this handbook to help you see what may be taking place with your home comfort system. From here, you’ll find a couple prevailing situtations that explain why your house is feeling too warm. And while a few of these are easy] DIY projects, you may still need to turn to a skilled technician for HVAC repair.

And if that’s the case, Kirkfield Heating & Air Conditioning is ready to assist. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Winnipeg.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Incorrect

Every home adjusts their thermostat a touch differently to work with their specific preferences. Even so, a number of homeowners make the misstep of setting their thermostat to “On” instead of “Auto.” With this setting, the fan in your system will continue to blow even once you’ve reached your set temperature.

This can feel like your system is distributing warmish air, when really it’s simply employing the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Trying changing this setting and see if things seem better.

2. Your Air Conditioner Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two primary spaces to investigate for dirt or dust accumulation when your cooling system doesn’t feel like it is working well.

Before anything else, check out your AC system’s filter. If you don’t switch your filter on a regular basis, accumulated dirt can make it hard for air to flow through and lower the temperature your house. If your filter is visibly dirty or dusty, it’s probably time to replace it. (And as a rule, you should replace it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter seems good, head to your external unit. Make sure there’s adequate space around your air conditioner and clean up plants or dirt stuck there. This part of your cooling system releases the heat from inside your house. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be comfortable inside.

We advise scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your unit working properly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Releasing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that conditions the air in your space. It cycles between your inside and outside system pieces to absorb and discharge heat, to help your home remain cool. If there is an opening along that path, you won’t be cool again until you book professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in conditioned air, more expensive monthly expenses, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises originating from your air conditioner.

If you suspect refrigerant might be leaking, call Kirkfield Heating & Air Conditioning for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Pieces Need to Be Replaced

Your AC includes a a handful of crucial pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one part is broken, your home comfort is hurt.

Our Kirkfield Heating & Air Conditioning pros are certified and skilled in all areas of HVAC. They can help you locate and fix any issue.

5. Your AC Needs to Be Updated

If your equipment is more than 10 years old, it may be time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system gets up there in years, it simply won’t work as well as it has in the past. And it could be making your space less comfortable.

If your AC is on the younger side but still isn’t cutting it, it could be undersized for your living space. HVAC systems are not all the same size. An air conditioner that’s not powerful enough absolutely can’t chill a space the way a properly sized system can.
